WHY SHEPHERDS!

 “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keep watch over their flock by night…” And an Angel appeared to them. And the glory of the LORD shone all around them! And then a multitude of “the Heavenly Host”  “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. “ Luke 2

As I contemplated the amazing glory of the LORD shinning all about the lowly shepherds, the reason for first appearing to them when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, made my mind go to my favorite Psalm lately: “The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall not want (I will not lack what I need). Psalm 23.

The shepherds watch care for their sheep in the field, is just how our Good Shepherd describes His care for his children.  “He leads me beside the still waters…” His peace is near. “He restores my soul…” We may have His forgiveness and love and assurance of eternal life with Him.

“He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” And there is little regret.

We may “walk through the valley of the shadow of death,” but no fear; He is with me.

All the rest of my life is in the care of the Good Shepherd. “Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

Jesus: “Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. 

All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 

I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 

The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.” John 10:7-11 

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9.

“…and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”  

Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

Isn’t it beautiful. The Son of God, Jesus will be your Good Shepherd. He gave His life on the cross and rose from the dead … for you and for me.
