LET'S NOT MISS IT!

There is something we could miss:  A division of our culture has become “smart ass” and are trying to enforce their opinions on our whole Country.  We are barraged by secular people and philosophies who “know more than God.” We are traditionally Christian. Those who are determined to be “right” are heading to a dark spiritual tunnel.  This is a powerful reaction to our Creator’s truth.  This current force for hating what Scripture has written to mankind has an obstinate determination to make their thinking the final word.  They think they know it all.

Our Creator, Jesus Christ, has written the Bible to give us a Guide to success … every time, in every way.  But seculars think God is a fantasy.  These loud voices in the world today will not listen for the “still, small voice” of our Creator God. If God is a fantasy, why worry about him and strive against him?

We are in danger of missing out.  There is a divide between good and evil in America today that is clear and sharp.  Let’s go back to The Ten Commandments for starters.

I promise on the authority of God’s Word, which is eternal, that we will find a healing in our land, a coming together, a peace and calm that will be a mysterious and beautiful “turn about.”  It’s called Light.  He is called, Jesus.  “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

Let us, my fellow Believer, bring healing and hope and: “be ready always to give an answer to every person that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.”
I Peter 3:15.

ARE WE DRIVING OUR HUSBANDS AWAY?

Though we are married to a good man, a faithful husband, even a patient one, do we drive them away without realizing it?

Remembering back to those ten years writing “Submission Is Not Silence”, my heart drove me because I craved Eric’s heart, not just having his ring on my finger. My challenge was timidity and fear, but now I more clearly understand that all of us girls tend to make similar mistakes.

My husband often traveled the United States as a Logistics Manager for the Navy.  I knew the people on his team went to bars at night and women were all around.  I prayed that another woman would not wiggle her way into his heart.  When he was in his home office, he was steadfast and came home after work every day, but my fear was that someone would vie for his heart.  When he travelled, sometimes for five days at a time, I lay awake at night, home with our children and fearing for my place in his heart.

My mistakes and insecurities could have driven him away.  I had trouble believing he loved me…it hurt him deeply.  I often didn’t speak up and say what I thought and expected him to somehow know!  His response, “I won’t know what you think unless you tell me,” didn’t sink in.  I feared to say what I thought, not realizing that “speaking the truth in love” would bring us together.

Now, this struggle will be different than yours.  This morning a woman walking her two grandchildren stopped to chat.  Eric and I were having coffee on the porch.  Not realizing it, I politely encouraged her to talk, but she never paused, never stopped, never asked a question.  Her bitterness at her former husband poured out again (I had heard the same stories on another day).  Her three daughters are not doing well.  Two are divorced, one is having serious panic attacks, her young grandson isn’t talking.   Her days are filled caring for her grandchildren.  Yes, she is in trouble.
Today it was a conversation that went one way, which I unwittingly encouraged…I was polite.  She was not of a mind to converse, but only to spill over her grief and bitterness.

What happened? I think of the tendency of us, as girls, to interact with each other, which is good.  But do we do this to the neglect of our husbands?  Are we now safe, we have our man…now I get to do as I wish?  What about him?

As time passed in our marriage, I learned that when he traveled, Eric ate in his room at hotels alone instead of going to the bars.  He didn’t join the others in compromising places, I discovered that my husband walked a path different from his fellow workers.

In 2020, with our forty-eighth anniversary coming, I see that my fears and my own personal journey of mistakes mixed with success has brought us to a good place.  I tend to think that we girls have more to do with a happy marriage than we think.  We are relational…more than most men.  We are more aware of how our children and friends are doing.  But what about our husbands!

Here is what I’ve come to believe.  When God said, “Husbands, love your wives…” and when God tells us personally in Scripture, “The wife, see that she reverence her husband…” these are deep and profound and powerful statements.  Your husband, whom you likely chose to marry, deserves first place, after your LORD and Savior.  He deserves respect, sensitive consideration, to be listened to.
I’m a talker. One of my ongoing challenges is to listen to him, I mean listen with my brain, my heart and my ears to what Eric has to say…and wait until he finishes his sentence before I break in with my ideas (and very profound opinions)!  To be fair, we’re both working on being good conversationalists.

But we have a head start:  we’ve made the mistakes…we’ve survived…and now by God’s grace we are thriving! But there will still be hurts and challenges going both ways.  Now the difference is, we know how much it damages the other when we stop communicating.  We know how painful it is to go to bed mad! And hurt!

Here is a challenge to you, my friends:  Think: Respect, when it comes to your husband.  You’ve got his ring and his worldly goods.  Now learn to listen, really listen with your head and heart to what he thinks. I’m still learning this lesson: and I am growing to more clearly understand him, I’ve grown wiser.

You might react here! But think of the designated place God has put your husband in:  Marriage is a “picture” of Christ and His Church.  “For the husband is head of the wife as Christ is head of the Church…” Ephesians 5:23.

With great gratitude to the LORD and to Eric, my prayers have been answered.  He is the man I prayed for as a little girl, “Lord, please give me a husband who is a man of God and who loves me.”

FORGET THE PAST...LOOK AHEAD

“I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.” (II John 2:12).

I have regrets plenty. Red faced, embarrassed, I am tempted to look back and dwell on them. Or, sometimes I’m just sad, wishing I’d done differently. But I have decided to quit that! I will look ahead because I’ve been given permission; "...forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before..." Philippians 3:13.

If the failures, hurts and indignities laid on you by others or brought on yourself, loom like a gathering storm, look forward. God is there. “A new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shines.” (I John 2:8). God will be in your future if you ask Him…as soon as you repent, turn around and believe.

When a certain familiar fear threatens you again, very purposefully quote this verse: “Submit yourself therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:7, 8).  Peace will come.

The Word of God is “alive and active” in you. (Hebrews 4:12) Use this powerful technique at the same moment a storm brews in your soul.

Heb 4:12  "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12.

So, the Word of God is alive. Quick: is to live (literally or figuratively). Be ready for the next time that old familiar downward spiral begins. Stop it. Memorize the “quick and powerful” verse. With this you are ready day or night. A positive mind is being planted in you.

PONDER YOUR PATH

This song touched me deeply growing up, “How About Your Heart . . . is it right with God, that’s the thing that counts today.  Is it black with sin, is it pure within? Won’t you ask Christ in today . . . People often see you, just as you are outside; Jesus really knows you, for He sees inside . . .”

There is temptation to join up, be part of the crowd: the loud, boisterous, opinionated . . . at times drunken, violent, immoral players.  Are you a Believer in Jesus? Ponder your path…walk away!  Say to your loving Heavenly Father, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me . . . take not your Holy Spirit from me . . . restore to me the joy of your salvation.” Psalm 51:10.

If we don’t get it right inside, we might end up for a lifetime with a darkened heart.

Sure, strong opinions if they are based on the truth of the Bible are good . . . but where is your heart!

Even the wicked King of Nineveh got it.

When the reticent prophet Jonah finally obeyed the LORD and walked through Nineveh for three days, he shouted out loud “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown;” the King responded from his heart; “For word came to the King of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything: let them not feed, nor drink water. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger that we perish not?  And God saw their works that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.” Jonah 3:6-10

Now is your time.   Walk away from the violence, immorality, drugs and drunkenness . . . Let your prayer be, “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.” The LORD from Heaven will help you, assure you, be with you.

HISTORY IN THE BIBLE IS SAD

Pay attention: the history of God’s people in the Bible is sad.  Read the Bible.  Pay attention to the stories, parables, Psalms, Prophets, Holy Men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The words written to us from God through these Holy men become more profound, meaningful, deep, the more you read…not less.  There is not a superfluous word written to us.  (It is important to pray when you begin, “Lord, speak to me through your Word.” Forget the stupid political pressure of today. Forget the scoffers.   Think about God, who gave us what we need to know in Scripture so that we are equipped to live well, to lead a successful life.

The only question left is, Will I?  If I choose to please Almighty God, Creator of the ends of the earth and I accept His gift of eternal life, forgiveness of my sins, I enter his fold. He is then my Shepherd, and He says, “My sheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me.  And I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” The Almighty, All Knowing, Everywhere Present God is to be reverenced, worshipped and loved back. Do you hear his voice?

The history in the Bible is a very long warning of what comes to every person who chooses to rebel against Almighty God.  And the promises of assurance: eternal life and the Presence of God are there for the taking.

So again, the question comes up:  Will I? Will I plead, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in me.  Cast me not away from thy presence and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of thy salvation.”  He will because the amazing, generous, forgiving God always will.

DON’T BECOME “THE HIDDEN HOUSE”

For years I rode my bike through a neighborhood with a dirt road.  It is a route getting from one busy two-lane road having a side dirt road, to another one with a sidewalk.

Near one end, as I cut through the neighborhood, on the corner was a lot with dense trees and bushes, and overgrown landscaping.  There was a house in there, it seemed.  A short cement driveway led to a two-car garage that was always closed.  There were a couple of lounge chairs and trash containers in the front.   Somehow, it was a charming scene. All around were beautiful homes in a well-established area.

One time riding past, I noticed a small homemade “For Sale by Owner” sign…it waited there for months.  Then, last week as I rode by loud noises were coming from that direction.  As I neared, the sign was gone.  A crew of about six men and a woman were working intensely, trucks and shredders were being used.

Yesterday, as I rode by again, I gasped out loud.  The crew was still there, but the house showed! Behind all the overgrown trees and weeds was a stunningly beautiful two, or three-story house.  I'm not sure now, the sight was so amazing!

I began thinking, riding on, “That beautiful house might be you. You are amazing.”  The overgrown, untended yard is not your destiny.  Fears, insecurity, doubt about your gifts need to be cleared. Competitiveness, comparing yourself with anyone is harmful. Make your move:  get around a crew of capable, honest and caring “Tenders” who believe in you and are ready to assist you in clearing away the brush.  I’m preaching to myself.  Get into the company of people who believe in Jesus and live by the Bible.  Here is permission: “The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you.  He will be with you.  He will not fail you or forsake you.  Fear not, nor be dismayed.”

Jesus said, “Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? And not to be set on a candlestick?”  Mar_4:21

STAY NEAR THE SHEPHERD

Lately, the hope that God is involved in every moment in the lives of us, His children, came into question.

Can I, a faulty child of the Father, expect Him to answer every prayer?

Yesterday I was riding my bike home…there were six miles between me and home.  The weather had reported “no rain” for the day.  It began to lightly sprinkle.  I prayed, “LORD, please don’t let it rain (or lightening) until I get home.” It sprinkled on and off.  It did not begin to rain (lightly) until I was three fourths of a mile from home.  I walked into the house damp, not soaked.  No lightening. Safe.

I asked the LORD the question, “How much do You desire to be involved, interactive with me?”

Then I read Psalm 23.  He is my shepherd: I shall not want (by implication to fail, lessen).  He makes me lie down in green pastures.  He leads me beside still waters.  He restores my soul.  He leads me in the paths of righteousness…I fear no evil for He is with me…comfort is present…a table is prepared…He anoints my head with oil…my cup runs over…goodness, mercy follow me all the days of my life…I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever…

Yes.  The LORD is interested in every day, every hour, and every part of my life.

Keep close.  Stay near the Shepherd.
